Balao - ECUADOR
Flower of the Andes is a low shrub, reaching a height of about 30 cm. Flowers are pale yellow or orange. It is native to Ecuador and Peru. The hummingbirds feed on the nectar.
It can be found over 3000 m of altitude. It has several medicinal uses. Depending on how it is prerared and which part is used it helps with liver issues or it is good to heal scars.
Chuquiragua flowers are easy to get on local markets in Latacunga and Ambato.
Some consider the Chuquiragua the National Flower of Ecuador.
